Survivor Testimonials
“I have been a Triple Negative Breast cancer Survivor for Five (5) years. I became a participant of the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s Young Survivors program at its initiation. I have thoroughly enjoyed the times that we have shared. Being in the presence of other Survivors simply gives me a sense of comfort. I can truly say that this program is uplifting, unifying, and fun!” Young Survivor in Action Participant Age 56
"July , I became an active stage IV breast cancer patient. At the time of my cancer diagnosis, it was devastating. I started to pray to God, Day and Night. I also gave my prayer request to family, church, friends and people who I met at the Nanticoke Cancer Care Center. A few months later, I started to feel better about cancer. Stage IV Breast Cancer was not a death sentence. . Through Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, I started to go to support group, talking with survivors and mentors. I started to see REAL hope." Age 49
"I was diagnosed with breast cancer on January 2020. That was the worst day of my life. It happened just at the beginning of the pandemic. I felt very lonely and isolated since I couldn’t see anybody or go anywhere. All my family lives in México. I kept it to myself without telling my family. I started looking for help. I called my church asking for prayers and support. They have a wonderful compassionate caring ministry. They referred me to Connie from Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition. I called her as soon as I could. I really needed support. She was super caring listening to my story and offered me all kind of help. I really felt connected and most of all that she really cared. Then, later on I met Meredith and she also was so helpful and perfectly understood my situation. She has been a great support. When someone faced the same disease you are facing you that makes you feel like a real bonding. Every time I called any of them for any kind of help or question they were always there for me. I started attending to the support group meetings on Zoom every month. They were there through all my chemotherapies and my surgeries." Age 48
"Just want you to know that the weekly zoom sessions I’ve found very helpful. They are allowing me to interact with people, which I am desperately missing right now. I just hope I’m not dominating the conversation....I can get carried away!
My crafts may not win rave reviews, but the 90minutes of structured time is very helpful.
Thank you and Amanda for organizing!" Age 65
"I am no longer in treatment for my triple negative breast cancer--when the body finally got strong enough to start again, I had the chemo in September and October (4 doses of erbulin)--the drug was easy to take, but hard on me in that I was wiped out of energy-- it was not going to cure the cancer but control the symptoms--that was not accomplished as I continued to have fluid in my chest cavity that had to be drained intermittently
So, I stopped the end of October, and I am now in the Delaware Hospice program--I am at home, up and about and doing things for myself and the family--no more doctor's visits, hospital stays or procedures.
So far, my lungs are clear, and I have no breathing problems--still very low on energy--my situation may be shared
I have found my association with DBCC very rewarding and strongly support the group and the programs--may the good work continue." Age 77, passed away April 2022
"Wow, that is beautiful. I thought of you the other day, I was at Ashland Nature Center by my house and saw the most beautiful cardinal. I tried a few times to get a picture, but it was elusive! So I realized maybe I’m just meant to enjoy it. I saw some frozen over creeks too with water babbling under the ice which was pretty amazing too. I don’t have pictures of any of it, but I hope you know that you and this challenge have made me more aware to be conscious and present. I have been seeing so many beautiful and interesting things that I would have normally missed." Age 44 referencing the Nurture with Nature Photo challenge.
Thank you SO much, Connie. In a day that was overwhelming and scary, you were reassuring and calming. It meant the world!" Age 62
